If you don't know who is Dr. Dre, You are missing out something in life. You know Eminem right? Snoop Dogg? Beats sound systems? Hip Hop culture?!! They are there, all because of Dr. Dre.
Dr. Dre is a Rapper, songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, record executive, actor, audio engineer, Grammy winner with the net worth of 820 million dollars. Wooof !!!
Now how did he do it? You can look it up on documentaries, about how did he do it. But now I am telling you a different story. I am telling you what I learned from Dr. Dre. And why it is so important to have those qualities as an Indian Music artist also.
To be honest, if you are a musician, knowing only one thing in this era won’t make any difference. As an independent Indian musician, I had to learn a lot of things to be present in the scene and knowing what I am doing with my music career.
Okay, you sing, play guitar, piano, drums, 7 instruments at once? But no matter what you do, It's not relevant if you don’t have something remarkable to give in the pallet. Okay even if you found your sound & brand image, but now what? How will you let people know your music? They are not going to come to you looking for a super hybrid Locrian modal song. They don't give a damn about your music. Honestly, they don't have time to listen.
So Yeah,
How will you cut through your struggles?
Market Yourself - From a young age, Dre was crafting his skills in business and sales. After recording one song called ‘Surgery’, Dre managed to sell 50,000 copies of it on his own in and around the Compton area. He used to reach people physically and tell them to share it with their friends. It took him a lot of time and planning to sell that 50k copies, but he went more and more experienced about how to reach people more easily and broadly.
Connection - Reach out to people. There always will be someone who is looking for you. Maybe you are not just reaching them yet, or you might not know how to do it. Dr. Dre. Dre has worked with some of the top talents in the music business, from Mary J. Blige to 2Pac and Snoop Dogg. He produced Eminem’s groundbreaking albums and helped launch the Detroit rapper’s meteoric career. Dre’s success isn’t just a result of personal skill, talent, and expertise: It’s grown from his collaborations with other talented people. Take note of this as you build your team and grow your business. A successful leader is only as strong and effective as the people he or she leads.
Hustle - Every successful musician started from scratch. Most of them are very very poor. Dre grew up in a rough household with an abusive father. After dropping out of high school, Andre Romelle (Dr. Dre) Young started his career in the early 80’s DJ-ing at a local Compton nightclub. And Compton is a bad place to grow up. He faced a lot of problems and he also found a way to get out of those problems. Without knowing the pain, you will never know the true value of gain.
Know all the essentials - I know it is so important to focus on one thing, but in this era, where there is so much versatile talent around you, you have to be out of the box. learn all the essential from each subject that can make your craft more presentable, innovative, exciting. Dig into anything knowledgeable which excites you. You will never know, where you can find your inspiration. If you take a look at big artists, scientists, they found their inspiration from different things.
Learn your craft Know yourself - Dre struggled in school, but he’s demonstrated that academic success is not necessarily an indicator of entrepreneurial acumen. As it became clear that school wasn’t the place where he could shine, Dre began devoting himself to his DJ work--leading to his alliance with the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, his first step on the pathway to success. Dre’s success grew from his ability to identify and play to his strengths. If you’re struggling to get ahead, take a step back, and evaluate where your strengths really lie.
Business - One of the early ways that Dre combined artistry and entrepreneurship turned out to be one of his smartest moves. He made sure that he earned a royalty from all of the records that he produced, which included blockbusters like Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle, which sold more than five million copies. While many artists find themselves stuck in bad contracts that don’t allow them to capitalize on their recordings, Dre was smart and made sure that his producing work could be a powerful revenue stream. Never jump into partnerships without looking ahead and protecting what’s yours: now and in the future.
Brand Identity - Dre partnered with Jimmy Iovine to launch Beats by Dre in 2008. The pair subsequently founded Beats Music, a streaming service, and, in one of the biggest deals in the industry, the company was acquired by Apple. This success was possible because of Beats by Dre’s swift rise to the top of the consumer audio technology industry--and that rise was the result of Dre’s savvy branding acumen. Beats by Dre weren’t just headphones--they were beautifully designed headphones. Dre and Iovine did a little celebrity branding of their own by making sure the headphones were spotted on the ears of the hottest and hippest people, from will.i.am to LeBron James. Dre tapped his extensive network of entertainment luminaries to pull off the marketing coup that made Beats by Dre an unprecedented success. You can learn from this move? Don’t underestimate the importance of brand identity.
In short - His hustle, work ethic, and skill have taken him from the streets of Compton to a multi-billion-dollar exit to Apple
